If you're here, you probably want to learn how Gems as a species are different from humans. Below is an explanation of all the ins and outs of being a Gem!
| FEATURES |
- Identity Gems as a species are sexless and have no concept of gender, and so refer to each other and themselves with gender neutral pronouns. Despite this, I'll have Ghost refer to your character with their proper pronouns, so I ask you do the same for my character.
- Immortal Gems can not die. The closest thing to death for Gems is being ground into dust, and therefore remain in suspended conciousness. As long as they can be put back together, however, they can "come back to life." For the purposes of the game, a full body shatter will count as death.
- Durability Gems are really tough to break- but it's not impossible. Ghost Quartz, specifically, has a Mohs scale hardness of 7.
- Photosynthesis Gems have no need for eating food, as they do not gain energy the same way as humans. Instead, Gems convert natural light (such as the light of the sun or the light of a jellyfish) into energy. If they are without light for an extended period of time, they will fall into a deep sleep. This is also why Gems sleep during the winter- where they come from there isn't enough sunlight during the winter season for most gems to stay awake, so they hibernate until spring.
- Shattering Like real gemstones, the Gems of Houseki no Kuni can be shattered or broken into pieces if enough force is applied. This can result in memory loss if the broken pieces are not reattached, as a Gem's memories are stored within their inclusions. It should be noted that Gems do not seem to gain memories upon being fused with another gem.
- Bodily Functions Gems also don't have to breathe! This allows them to do things humans can't do, such as traverse in space or underwater. They do need to apply a special powder so as to not damage their "skin" when going underwater, however. They also can't feel changes in the temperature as they do not have the organs or skin to process them.

| ABILITIES |
- COMBAT They know how to use a scythe, though in canon it's noted that they're out of practice.
- STRUCTURE Ghost has a multi-layered structure, meaning that inside them lives another Gem, namely Cairngorm. This no longer applies in Chroma, as Ghost's body has been modified. They now sport a hollow interior, making them easier to break despite their 7 hardness.
